What's the difference between an easy, moderate and strenuous hike?
The following are general guidelines for our hike ratings, obtained after carefully assessing information from hiking guides and our own preview of the hike.
- Easy - Trips with a maximum distance of 5 miles round trip and altitude gain up to 500 feet.
- Moderate - Trips up to 10 miles round trip and an altitude gain of 1,000 - 1,500 feet.
- Strenuous - Trips up to 15 miles round trip and an altitude gain of 1,000-3000 feet
From time to time, some activities just fall right in between the rating levels. So don't be surprised if you see an "easy moderate" hike or a "moderate strenuous" hike.
Also taken into account are challenging conditions, such as the roughness of the trail and seasonal considerations (extreme heat or cold), and so the rating may be increased to account for this. The leaders try to describe the outing the best they can and welcome any questions you may have before going.
